1 kW (SETI) Signals At 100 Light Years

9006-020

This graph shows the CNRs normalized to a modest 1 kW transmitter for microwave and optical beacons at a range of 100 L.Y. (16.3 kbytes)

This graph shows the relative efficacy of the three types of cw beacons at a range of 100 light years.  This range encompasses about 1000 solar-type stars. Clearly, if diffraction-limited performance is allowed for the optical systems, then the visible optical link is superior to the microwave, despite what has been previously suggested in most of the SETI literature.  The microwave signal is just about detectable.

Compare this graph to 9301-027.
