Basic Optical Heterodyne Receiver9006-026
This diagram shows the basic design of an optical heterodyne receiver for detecting cw beacons. The 1st local oscillator (laser) power is divided in half and used to feed two separate optical heterodyne receivers. One optical heterodyne receiver responds to any vertically polarized signal component while the other responds to any horizontally polarized signal component. The first IF signals are mixed down to a lower second IF and fed to respective Multichannel Spectrum Analyzers (MCSAs). The Columbus Optical SETI Observatory
