The COSETI Observatory
Reducing the Data Rate for AMOSETI Photon-Counting Systems.
- Assume that the beacon signals are very powerful and that small telescope systems can detect pulses as bursts of many photons.
-
- Set a high discriminator threshold to suppress unwanted background photon and thermal noise counts.
-
- Advantages are that the data rate is small and the data storage requirements are very modest.
-
- Disadvantages are that the sensitivity is reduced and technique can only work if ETI pulses are strong. The pulses must consist of the simultaneous arrival of many photons within the resolution time of the optical receiving system.
