- 1984 Prestigious British Rank Prize for Optoelectronics.
- 1996 R&D 100 Award.
- Arranged and chaired the first two international conferences on Optical SETI which were held in 1993 and 1996, respectively. These conferences were organized and hosted by SPIE (International Society for Optical Engineering). A third conference is being planned for 2001.
