Spreadsheet Templates for SETIRadobs 28For most of the time past decade I have done my scientific modelling with spreadsheet software on a PC. The nice thing about spreadsheets are their open structure, the ease by which they can be modified and customized, and the "what-if" feature. I am putting together two Symphony (and Lotus) spreadsheet templates (with corresponding help files) which combine much of my analyses on Optical SETI developed during the past eight months. The Lotus 1-2-3 versions are compatible with Quattro, SuperCalc and other spreadsheet programs. Version 1.0 of these spreadsheets should be ready within a few weeks, time permitting. I would like to upload them onto the RADOBS bulletin board for other to use and comment upon. Copies will also be provided to the SETI institute. I would appreciate hearing from members of RADOBS if they have an interest in "playing" with SETI scenarios. The main files are: Symphony File SETI1.WR1 Size: Approximately 100 k Lotus File SETI1.WK1 Size: Approximately 100 k Symphony File SETI2.WR1 Size: Approximately 50 k Lotus File SETI2.WK1 Size: Approximately 50 k Could Steve Janis or someone else please tell me on to what part of RADOBS can I upload these files, so that others can access them for easy downloading? A brief description of these files now follows: SETI1.WR1 & SETI1.WK1 PERFORMANCE OF MICROWAVE & OPTICAL SETI SYSTEMS: The basic function of this spreadsheet is to calculate: 1. The signal, all noise levels, and signal-to-noise ratio for different systems. Features: 1. This spreadsheet template allows for the simultaneous comparison of six scenarios or systems. 2. Separate modelling of both the transmitter and receiver, i.e, systems do not have to be symmetric. 3. Accounts for both continuous wave and pulse modulation. 4. Accounting for artificial transmitter beam defocusing, interstellar and atmospheric absorption. 5. Models, microwave, optical photon-counting, and optical heterodyne receivers. 6. Both optical pre-detection and electrical post-detection bandwidths may be independently adjusted. 7. Accounts for effect of sinc^2 polar response on the diffraction-limited pixel response to Planckian starlight. 8. Accounts for night and day background radiation for ground-based observatories. 9. Contains pre-configured graphs of signal and noise levels, and signal- to-noise ratios. 10. Contains self-checking for incorrect data. 11. On-line help and theory supporting the spreadsheet is available under macro control. 12. Tables of astrophysical data provided for use within spreadsheet template. 13. Print settings pre-configured for compressed printing on HP LaserJet II and Epson FX80 printers. SETI2.WR1 & SETI2.WK1 SEARCH STRATEGY FOR MICROWAVE & OPTICAL SETI: The basic function of this spreadsheet is to calculate: 1. Doppler shifts & drifts. 2. Time for a targeted search and an all sky survey. Features: 1. This spreadsheet template allows for the simultaneous comparison of six scenarios or systems. 2. A macro is provided which affords 3-D linkage to the file SETI1.WR1 (or SETI1.WK1) to automatically import previously calculated data. 3. Contains pre-configured graphs of Doppler shifts and drifts, and times for the targeted search and all sky survey. 4. On-line help and theory supporting the spreadsheet is available under macro control. 5. Print settings pre-configured for compressed printing on HP LaserJet II and Epson FX80 printers.
